St. Basil’s Bread - Vasilopita Cutting

One of the most beautiful and inspiring traditions and customs of our Greek Orthodox Church is maybe the cutting of Vasilopita. The word Vasilopita is a compound Greek word which means “St. Basil’s Bread”. The tradition of cutting a special "pita" (a loaf of bread, a cake, or even a pie in some areas of Greece) each year on January 1st in honor of Saint Basil the Great is observed for centuries upon centuries by all the Greeks around the world.

Our Greek School students last week had the opportunity to learn all about this beautiful custom and its connection to Saint Basil the Great. Many thanks should go to our wonderful Greek School PTA that provided a Vasilopita for each class so that our students have the opportunity to share this wonderful tradition with their classmates.

May this New Year bring a lot of health, happiness and love to our hearts and homes!
