Vasilopita 2023 (St. Basil’s Bread)

In honor of Saint Basil the Great, Greeks all over the world commemorate a centuries-old tradition by slicing a distinctive "pita" (loaf of bread, cake, or even pie in certain regions of Greece) on January 1st. The ritual and practice of slicing the Vasilopita, also known as St. Basil's bread, is one of the most beautiful and inspiring in our Greek Orthodox Church. The direct translation of the Greek compound phrase “vasilopita ” is "St. Basil's bread."

Today, the students of our Greek school had the chance to learn everything there is to know about this wonderful tradition and its relationship to Saint Basil the Great.

Many thanks to our wonderful Greek School PTA for providing each classroom with a vasilopita so that all our students can participate in the festivities.
