THE MAGIC OF KARAGIOZIS

Today our students had the opportunity to learn about the Greek shadow theater and its main character, Karagiozis (Καραγκιόζης). Karagiozis is a poor hunchbacked Greek with a lengthy right hand, ragged and patched clothes and bare feet. He lives during the times of the Ottoman Empire in a poor cottage (παράγκα) with his wife Aglaia and his three sons. The scene of a usual Karagiozis play depicts his home on the left and the Sultan’s Palace (Σαράι) on the right. Due to his poverty, Karagiozis resorts to his cunning and wit to extricate himself from dangerous situations.

During the summers in Greece, Karagiozis puppeteers perform all across the country, allowing children to have a closer look at this folkloric character and experience its magic.

Our students heard about the story of Karagiozis, saw a short play and constructed his figure.
